‘ONCE UPON A TIME’ is a playgroup for 2-5 year old children and their parents. The focus of the group is ‘dramatic play’ with themes from fairy tales and folk tales, and inspired stories.
This series uses multiple forms of expression - recycled materials, makeshift instruments, scarves, boxes, creative materials, and children’s song and movement - to enliven storytelling and dramatic play.
The universal formula in all good stories across centuries and cultures will be noted as a vital code to understanding story as a teacher and as a friend. For a story to entice us, it will include: an introduction, the mounting action, the turning point, and the resolution.
Creating safe play-space, socializing through a mutually shared adventure, and exploring through creative expression, will be the goals of “Once Upon a Time.” Children can expect to enact parts of a fairy tale by being, for example, a magical animal, or marching in a parade following the Pied Piper, or waving scarves as wind, or building a house of straw, sticks, or bricks for “The Three Little Pigs.”
The closure of the series will invite a small group to an informal demo performance by the children or together with their parents, of one of the stories or favorite characterizations. In addition, each child will be gifted with a book, and each will make at least one creation, to bring home as a remembrance of “Once Upon a Time.”
